Traditional Credit Union Limited was incorporated in 1994 by a group of Aboriginal Elders to provide financial services to residents of Arnhemland communities who were disadvantaged by a lack of banking and other financial services. With its first remote branch opened in Milingimbi in 1995 it has grown to a network of seventeen branches. As a credit union, its members (whether individuals, family groups or organisations) are shareholders.
Traditional Credit Union Limited offers a full range of banking products and services. These include loans such as personal loans and auto loans. Moreover, it also offers transactions accounts, business accounts and term deposits. In addition, it also provide Financial Literacy Education to its community. Likewise, internet and phone banking services are also offered. Employees receive extensive on and off the job training. On commencement with the credit union, employees attend an induction program designed to welcome all new employees to the Credit Union. This training is regarded as a vital part of staff recruitment and introduction into the working environment at TCU.
TCU’s mission statement is to provide personalised quality financial services for the Indigenous people and organizations in remote communities while respecting and valuing the cultural heritage of Indigenous Australians.
